Excuse us? Lemon meringue pie shake? What is this please? Well, firstly yes, it’s a real thing that exists in real life, and was clearly invented by a genius. It’s at Bowery Diner, the beautiful restaurant that opened next to the New Museum in January. Everything about it is classic, without being remotely Johnny Rockets, from the sunny tones of the décor to the menu, which is American-French, so instead of being limited to classic diner food such as onion rings and fries, you can get a spicy tuna tartare or some oysters. The grilled cheese, a mix of cheddar and swiss with garlic and thyme on country bread, as you would imagine, is insanity and, well…. the entire menu is basically great. But let’s talk about the pièce de résistance, the lemon meringue pie shake. They pop in the blender a piece of lemon meringue pie with some vanilla soft serve and passion fruit, and holy macaroni it’s good. Thank God it comes with a super-wide straw because that way you can suck up the little chunks of pie crust and meringue hidden like delicious little surprises throughout. When that thing shows up at your booth with whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry on top… we can’t even. Here’s a tip: order it first, and drink it before your food arrives. There’s NO sense in being too full to enjoy it.
