CBGB Festival Kicks Off Tonight With The Premiere Of The Rise And Fall Of The Clash

CBGB Culture // Music

Those who miss the good ol’ days of CBGB & OMFUG (if the drug-addled Bowery of the ’70s and ’80s is something people “miss”) now have a chance to give it one more brief ride: tonight kicks off CBGB Festival, a four-day riot of live music, film screenings and speeches dedicated to the club’s original mission to help new and young artists make their mark.

They’re doin’ it right, too. There are over 300 bands scheduled, and not Ramones cover acts either; skimming the list, we saw Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Guided By Voices, Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Cloud Nothings, War on Drugs, The Virgins, Lissy Trullie, Dale Earnheardt Jr Jr, and one of our new artists, The Denzels. The 28 film screenings range from new premieres, like doc The Rise and Fall of the Clash, to old favorites like Sid and Nancy and Punk’s Not Dead. And if you’re really into CBGB and movies, you’ll be excited to hear they started shooting CBGB: The Movie last month (odd fact: “rabid punk fan” Rupert Grint, of Ron Weasley fame, is playing the guitarist for favorite CBGB band Dead Boys. It’s okay, we don’t know, either).

But that’s not all, folks. The keynote speaker is none other than Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, and Tommy Ramone is showing face at some point too. With so much history and sweet acts going down in a famed NYC landmark, CBGB Fest pretty much rubs dirt in the noses of all other music festivals. Because it’s a little punk (literally).

You can purchase single tickets to a show, film, or conference talk (only $10!), ticket packages for all shows, all films, and all talks (varies by package), or a blanket pass to everything ($400, not bad). Great tunes, cool stories of a lost eras and good flicks – almost like having the real thing back in action. Just, please, don’t buy a T-shirt.
