Well, this is cool. Cronut mania has now found a way to help those less fortunate, and we don’t mean those at the end of the insane cronut line at Dominique Ansel’s namesake bakery. Wha’ ha happen was, Chef Ansel noticed a Twitter convo between Peter Som and DwellStudio Founder Christiane Lemieux in which they were jokingly contemplating a bartering system for cronuts. Cronuts can actually save the world, thought the Chef (JK), and so The Cronut Mission came to be. Real talk though, Ansel knew there had to be a way to use his pastry’s fame to bring awareness to a worthy cause and conceptualized a program in which well-known New Yorkers would each design a special cronut box for charity. 17 uniquely-designed boxes will be auctioned off to benefit God’s Love We Deliver, which actually happens to be a block from the cronut joint. Heidi Klum, Jonathan Adler, Simon Doonan, Christiane Lemiuex, Joan Rivers, Peter Som and a ton of Broadway stars have designed boxes, each of which will include two custom cronuts, filled with pumpkin cream and topped with 24K gold leaf. Sick! The auction started yesterday and goes until November 26 at Biddingowl.com, with each box starting at $100. Winners will have their unique, gold-topped deliciousness delivered Thanksgiving morning, so you will need to be in New York City, or at least have it delivered to someone living in New York City. OMG, can you imagine if some dude like included an engagement ring in the box and used a charitable cronut as his proposal prop? That would be sick. Hope that happens.
