Instagram Exhibit At The W Hotel Not All Pictures Of Food And Cats

The dim lobby bar of the W Times Square Hotel may not have the best light for taking stellar Instagram photos, but it’s sure a swell place to display them. Last night saw the opening of #WDesign, an exhibition of the best New York-centric Instagrams from community group @InstagramNYC and @WHotels, we feel was possibly devised to make mere mortals feel bad about their iPhone skillz.

The photos are insane, to say the least. We didn’t even know you could do these kinds of things with a phone (forehead slap). The exhibit is the result of a public competition from the hotel and InstagramNYC, the app-dedicated group founded by mobile photographer and Instagram extraordinaire Brian DiFeo (@bridif). Participants submitted over 5,000 photos to the hashtag #WDesign, and the 12 best photographers got their ker-azy cool snaps — such as a warped shot of the Guggenheim’s sensual curves, or a sunset captured through Brooklyn Bridge cables — featured at the W. And, as if these regular people with crazy Instaskillz weren’t enough to make that filtered snap of your cat look lame, the exhibit also shows a selection of photos from the city’s top six iPhone-ographers: DiFeo, @astrodub, @johndeguzman, @newyorkcity, @uptowneastnyc, and @cxcart (follow them. It’s worth it). Mere mobile photos, these are not. There are red-lighted, time-lapse shots of a subway in motion; a hipster biker zooming down the street, the cars around him a blur; the Flatiron building caught in a rearview mirror. Minds. Blown.

Strolling around the exhibit, it’s hard to fight the urge to immediately raid the App Store and take photos of the photos (so meta). But all jealousy aside, it’s a fantastic presentation. Even better, it’s up until June 30 and totally free to visit. Snap to it, y’all.
