Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind stuck with us for a number of reasons, the first being the procedure each patient undergoes to ‘wipe’ a person from their memory. Don’t you just wish you could do that sometimes? When you’ve been hurt real bad? The second thing that stuck with us from the movie was Montauk. Pretty sure we’d never even heard of Montauk until at that movie came out (being from Ireland and that). There’s a scene where Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are at a diner in the center of town and that diner is now home to newly-opened taco joint La Brisa. The Montauk outpost of Nolita’s Tacombi taqueria, where the tacos are made in a Combi van – hence the name. The cheerful turquoise interior makes you want to linger over some Sonoran-style tacos (thinly sliced everything) and three daily kinds of locally-caught fish tacos such as beer-battered fluke and soft-shell crab. The delicious house specialty, corn esquites (toasted corn, lime and chipotle mayo), is served in a cup so it’s slightly less likely you’ll need a thorough flossing directly after eating. Important: there’s an in-house tortilla machine so your tortillas are as fresh as that fish you’re eating. Meet you in Montauk.
