In a sea of New York City clothing boutiques where black is King, Moves is a rare gem. The new Graham Avenue, Williamsburg store is a refreshing celebration of color — color on top of color, color beside color, color and more color.
Every day, more and more, Williamsburg seems to be moving in the direction of the color palette of the ‘90s — the 1890s. Did you see that episode of Portlandia? Watch it. Moves offers up a breath of fresh air, availing a group of small, independent and largely New York-based designers who ain’t afraid of mad color or hot dogs, or other silly provocative shapes. Colorful jewelry, bags, shoes, bike gloves, biking utility belts, Spandex leggings, you name it. The store owners’ line RHLS — Ruffeo Hearts Lil Snotty — is fabricated in mainly color-blocked sweatshirt material. The store is a A Hot Tub Time Machine meets outer space sort of jam; you might walk out of the store with an intense desire to go skiing on the moon or to play mid ‘80s video games. Either way, the fact is these clothes make moon-skiing seem like real competitive sport and they make our nostalgia for the mid ‘80s come to a fever pitch. And, lest we forget, RHLS also makes a pair of male underwear called: manties. SOLD.
