The Bar Room Restaurant At MoMA Is 100% Byrne Notice Approved™

Prior to a screening of Lifetime’s House of Versace at the MoMA (yes, really) last week, we stopped by the Bar Room at The Modern for a glass of champagne and a snack and by the end of our short visit, we had a new favorite restaurant in New York City. Having never been before, our first approval was the Bauhaus-inspired decor. As part of the Museum of Modern Art, you wouldn’t expect anything less than design perfection and they bring it design-wise from the Danish contemporary wide-armed dining chairs to restrained tableware. The Danny Meyer restaurant offers Alsatian cuisine by Chef Gabriel Kreuther and the extensive Bar Room menu alone has more tartars than you can shake a stick at, from salmon to beef to a perfect upside down tuna tarte with fennel, Japanese cucumber and aioli. The tarte flambée with mushroom, chive and Comté cheese gratin is TDF and although not listed in the menu’s ‘social plates’ section is totes perfect as one for the table. Marc Aumont’s desserts are, of course, beautiful – the Pistachio Napoleon with Carmelia passion-fruit ganache and milk chocolate Chantilly is as good looking as the museum’s sculptures while the basket of warm beignets and accompanying caramel syrup, maple ice cream and mango marmalade made a truly substantial finale. What’s remarkable about the Bar Room is the buzzing atmosphere even at 6pm, the post-work, pre-theatre crowd keeps it lively. Mind you, if it’s something a little more formal you’re after, the adjoining Dining Room over looking the MoMA sculpture garden is the place for you. Us? We’ll be back to the Bar Room.
