The Boathouse Restaurant At Dromquinna Manor Has One Of The Most Magnificent Views In Ireland

When the sun shines, there are few places in the world as beautiful as the west coast of Ireland. The famously scenic Ring of Kerry takes you along winding mountain roads, and since it takes quite a while (sheep-heeding slows one down somewhat), you better have someplace lined up to eat the end of it. Make that stop at Kenmare—the most idyllic towns in Co. Kerry. Just outside town lies Dromquinna Manor on the Beara Peninsula. Signs along the drive alert you to heed hedgehogs crossing, and even if it’s a schmaltzy tourist trick, it succeeded in melting our hardened New York hearts before dinner. The main manor house dates back to 1890 and has been reincarnated many years later as a beautifully intimate event facility which was recently updated to include a luxury camping element. You don’t have to get married/turn 40/have a bat mitzvah/sleep in a tent to enjoy it though, you can just roll up and have dinner at property’s restaurant The Boathouse. Reminiscent in design of every Nantucket/Cape Cod/Montauk restaurant you’ve ever loved, the restaurant sits right at the edge of the water, facing down a pier with a little hut at the end, and some of the most scenic and remote views of the Beara peninsula there are. All the fish is locally caught, and with Ireland being one of the best places in the world to eat seafood, well obviously it’s beyond delish. Our pre-dinner snack—a potted crab mayonnaise—was insanity, although the very-fried tortilla chips in accompaniment felt like a slightly odd choice. The mussels in white wine cream were everything! Ireland may not be known for its wine, but its cream and butter are unparalleled so you can only imagine the creamy perfection of this sauce. Irish beef too, is notoriously juicy so the beef burger, rib-eye or filet are all great choices, as are the extensive seafood options. You must try the hefty sea-salt fries, which appeared to be once-fried so you get a seriously fluffy middle. Hello, Irish potatoes! On a sunny evening, ask for a table on the patio and watch the sunset. Believe us, it would be a mistake to go to County Kerry and not eat here.
