Since it’s opening in 2013, the London Edition has become the go-to spot for the international jet set as well as the more fashionable London set who frequent the stunning Berners Tavern restaurant as well as the nightlife bit in the basement, called uh, Basement. The second of many Editions (after Istanbul) planned for the world’s major cities, the London Edition has set a pretty high standard for the other properties. Location wise you are one block from Oxford Street – so convenient for Boots, Marks & Spencer and all those stores we wish we had in the US, but at the same time don’t because they make trips home a bit more special. You know?
At the hotel, the 173 wood paneled minimalist guest rooms and suites merge Ian Schrager’s modernist mentality with a luxury yacht meets that 70’s den realness, faux fur throw included. The custom Le Labo products in the bathroom will have you stealing that shower gel and maybe even hunting down the housekeeping cart for a few more (we didn’t do that, but don’t think for one second that we didn’t think about it). The other highlight among the in-room amenities? A loofah. There is nothing better after a transatlantic flight and jet lag nap than a full body scrub. Get that dry plane off us immediately, thank you. Then lather up in some Le Labo lotion and wrap up in a luxurious hooded robe.
Downstairs, Michelin-starred Executive Chef Jason Atherton heads up Berners Tavern where your most grave error would be to skip the burger, a supreme-tasting aged Scottish beef on a squashy brioche, topped with bacon. Of course we had to order the gigantic, thick-cut chips to. It’s hard to focus on the food in a room as impressive as Berners though. Art packs the walls and the architectural molded ceiling that blankets the room will have your mouth on the floor. Berners is still something of a hot spot, so even for brunch you will need a reservation. If you don’t feel like waiting, go at an off-hour and sit at the bar. Or you know, just book a room and get all the benefits of that. That burger is waiting.
