143 Ludlow Is A Welcome Combo Of Fantasy And Cool Downtown Grit

Chrissie Miller and Madeleine Von Froomer, the duo behind Sophomore, and Lindsey Thornburg of um, Lindsey Thornburg, had mutual crushes on each other’s clothing lines. A humble dream of sharing an office space together quickly morphed into something much bigger when an LES store space opened up through a friend. And quite accidentally, 143 Ludlow was born, now a two-month-old LES store. The Sophomore collection is inspired by the fun, quirky and youthful energy of brands Benetton and Esprit circa the late 80s and early 90s, while Lindsey Thornburg is her sophisticated older sister, draped in cloaks and gowns of sumptuous prints and cuts. “Sophomore” also takes cues from the 70s ghost of downtown New York past, while Thornburg takes cues from Pendleton blankets, Peruvian prints, with a dash of whimsical drama. Theirs is a very balanced and welcome combination of fantasy and cool downtown grit.
